South Dakota is not the most populous state in the Union. In fact, South Dakotans have just one seat in the House of Representatives. Yet, South Dakota is, physically speaking, a large state. So, it can be challenging for any group to get organized in South Dakota. Nonetheless, progressives in South Dakota are coming together like never before.
When people think of South Dakota nowadays, they think of the U.S. Senate's former Democratic minority leader Tom Daschle. In 2004, Senator Daschle faced a tough campaign to retain his seat, getting a surprisingly low level of support from South Dakota Democrats. The trouble with Daschle is that he was never very progressive at all. Daschle rolled over and submitted to the radical right-wing agenda of George W. Bush, disgusting so many progressive Democrats that the 2002 Congressional elections went overwhelmingly to the Republicans. We're pulling for the progressive Democrats in South Dakota, and that's why we don't lose any sleep over the fate of Tom Daschle. Daschle is one Democrat that South Dakota progressives are better off without.
We created this page of South Dakota progressive resources in order to lend a helping hand to the disperse liberal wing in the state. We're looking for help in expanding out listings here. So, if you know of any progressive candidates, information resources or organizations in South Dakota that we don't have listed here, let us know so that we can consider including them in our growing index.
